Weekly Zephyr #109: Here, These

I don’t want to pretend

that I have a genuine impulse to speak today. Out of respect to words, out of respect to you, I won’t fake it.

Since we have this standing date to meet here and I don’t want to leave you empty-handed, I’m going to give you a few things from my purse.

If we were meeting on a real street corner, I’d say we hug briefly, gesture to the world with whatever facial expression we have for the world, do the handover, hug once more and be done.

  • Sarah Kendzior’s Gaslit Nation podcast, the Freedom Square episode. This is not an easy listen by a long shot but I think everyone should listen anyway.

  • British TV series: “Landscape Artist of the Year” and “Portrait Artist of the Year”, available on Tubi and Amazon Prime. The Great British Baking Show for representational art but calmer, more pastoral, less bouncy. A soothing follow-up to Gaslit Nation.

  • Digital downloads from Ukrainian artists on Etsy as a means of direct support if that seems like something you’d like to do. Filter the shop location to Ukraine as you search. Will this help? I don’t know. It won’t hurt. The painting at the top is one of these.

  • Refuse to be Done, by Matt Bell. A new craft book for novel-writers. Great so far. I particularly dig the advice to write a detailed narrative outline in the voice of the story after a first draft but before you revise.

Okay, it was good to see you. Stay strong, or don’t if you can’t. Meet you here next week. Good luck. Love you.
